Sometimes the best books for discussion when a child is hurting are ones that speak to an aspect of the experience without recreating the child's current trauma.

One of my favorites for these situations is Lifetimes by Brian Mellonie.

Last year, when a ten-year-old boy in our area died of liver cancer, all my picture books on death circulated. Lifetimes is the one that children rated the best and that parents liked, too, for family reading and discussion. Parents reported back to me that tears were shed, but they like that death was given a context that the ten-year-olds could handle and that they felt comfortable discussing.
