I'm so glad Henrietta Smith mentioned Angela Johnson's picture book "When I Am Old with You." I was pleased to serve, along with Henrietta, on the Coretta Scott King Award committee that honored that book for its writing. And I know it's no small feat for a picture book to win a writing award, especially as it was competing with novels by the likes of Virginia Hamilton, Mildred D. Taylor and Walter Dean Myers.
Over the years, I have come to greatly appreciate Angela Johnson's picture books. "Do Like Kyla" and "One of Three" both make perfect read-alouds in preschool story hours. I have used them time and time again in these settings. And "Julius" is always a crowd favorite. I always like to introduce the book by showing the children the back flap copy that has photos of the author and illustrator's feet. That always sets the mood for the zaniness of the story.
