Our library received a new Native American legend/picture book about a Louisiana hurricane and flood a month before Katrina hit, and I have been sharing it with my education students during Library Instruction Sessions. I thought perhaps some of you might also be interested in it.

Moon's Cloud Blanket by Rose Anne St. Romain (first book for her!) ; illustrated by Joan C. Waites. Publisher: Gretna, La. : Pelican Pub. Co., 2003.

The OCLC summary says: "In this retelling of a Native American tale, The Moon weaves a blanket of clouds around a mother and her children who are freezing atop a cypress tree, having sought shelter from a flood."

The flood was caused by a hurricane, and The legend explains that The cloud blanket, which was created by The Moon to keep The family warm, turned into The Spanish Moss so prevalent in The South. The watercolor illustrations really set The mood and communicate The mystical feelings of The Cloud Blanket. The author has a personal note at The end of The story as well.
