Having grown up in Mississippi, I would like to echo an earlier posting about Deborah Wiles' new book, Each Little Bird that Sings. I agree - she writes authentically about small-town Deep South, and Mississippi in particular. What a great voice! Another book I would recommend is My Louisiana Sky, set in rural Louisiana in the 1950s, by Kimberly Willis Holt.
Moving out of the Louisiana and Mississippi region, one of the most appealing regional voices writing for kids these days, Barbara O'Connor really nails her native South Carolina and environs' small town communities. She often writes of kids on their own, our last theme, always with humor and a wonderful poignancy. My personal favorite, Fame and Glory in Freedom, Georgia, like most of her middle-grade fiction, tells of friendship and love with a cast of quirky, oddball characters. Augusta Scattergood
