Dean, you took the words right out of my mouth. Since I live now and have grown up enjoying the Texas Gulf Coast, Marian Hale evoked many memories in this book. I loved reading it and recommend it to students often. Young people need to understand what the Depression was like and this is a wonderful description of life at that time. It's a Depression-era novel about 12-year-old Sadie, who moves with her family from Missouri to Texas, near the Aransas Pass Seawall, an area I knew nothing about. It's a fascinating geographical context -- the Gulf Coast, the canneries, the story of the Seawall -- and a young girl's struggle to find new friends in a new home during another difficult time in American history. A remarkably well done first novel. There's a good reader's guide to it if you go to Google.
