A novel of the Gulf Coast:
A book I especially liked last year was The Truth About Sparrows by Marian Hale. It's a Depression-era novel about 12-year-old Sadie, who moves with her family from Missouri to Texas, near the Aransas Pass Seawall, an area I knew nothing about. It's a fascinating geographical context -- the Gulf Coast, the canneries, the story of the Seawall -- and a young girl's struggle to find new friends in a new home during another difficult time in American history. A remarkably well done first novel. There's a good reader's guide to it if you go to Google.
