At a local shipping store, there is a sign posted. The shop (partially in connection with a local church), is gathering goods to send to a similar store in Louisiana. The shop there, in connection with Their local church, will be giving items collected to the sheltered folks there - 4,000 and rising.

What does this have to do with our topic? On the sign is a list of items they are seeking. Water and canned goods top the list, naturally. Diapers and formula come soon after. Down, near clothes, is mentioned stuffed animals, small toys, coloring books, books and crayons. BUT THEY ARE THERE. I'm sure this is a list that has been used before, or has been taken from a relief organization. Either way, people who have dealt with tragic situations have recognized that these are as necessary as razors and deodorant.

I sat here last night, reading through the postings, getting incredibly irate. It drives me nuts when people get on their soap boxes and speak but don;t listen. Thankfully, today we are seeing the reasonableness return to the postings. People seeing that yes, food and water is the most crucial, but that at some point, other items may be needed. And this can include books, or magazines, or crayons. Finally someone mentioned that if anything, providing a reading time for kids would not only give a distraction for the little ones, but also give their caregivers and parents a probably more than needed break to tend to their own mental health.
I love this list. I love the heartfelt passion for books and life that drives it. Hopefully that same passion will help fuel the first wave of essential rescue items, and drive the second wave of not-as-essential comfort items. Just as long as we are more concerned with doing SOMETHING to help this horrible tragedy, rather than shooting each other down.
