>my children in any way. Just imagine trying to comfort and
>entertain your children in a shelter when your own heartbreak
As I watch the news and read the newspaper stories I find myself agreeing 1000% with Norma Jean's logical advice to not just rearrange furniture in the Titanic but rather keep it from going down as it relates to the aftermath of Katrina's fury. But then I read Sally's post and was reminded what a powerful lifeline books were for me and my family while we tried to survive living under communism in Cuba. They're a central theme in "Island Of My Heart," the middle grade novel I'm almost done writing.
So...after reading what's been posted so far on this topic I feel Scholastic got it right. They're graciously offering both short and long term help to the disaster victims. Kudos to them for donating $100,000 to meet the urgent/immediate needs Norma Jean so aptly described and then going the second mile partnering with others to help. I love what the article says, "The Company will work closely with the state departments of education in the affected region to assess their immediate and long-term needs for educational materials that will be so important in helping restore normalcy to children's lives." Thanks, Amy, for sharing the link to how Scholastic is helping out.
And thanks, Sandy, for telling us that cash donations can be sent thru the LLA-Disaster Relief. This is a GREAT list to belong to...if I listen long enough I get to hear all sides of an issue and can then best chose how I can help.
