Two excellent pieces of YA historic fiction with ties specifically to New Orleans immediately spring to mind:
  THE YEAR OF THE HANGMAN by Gary Blackwood

  But the book that has been on my mind since this tragic situation began is THE LAND by Mildred Taylor, a book I've literally read a dozen times and which makes my Deserted Island list any day of the week:

  When I hear on the news about Hattiesburg and Laurel, I have such vivid pictures in my head that I have to remind myself that I've never "really" been there. But I have.
