My friend Linda Strauss and I were discussing the recent posts on this issue, and it occurred to us that so many, in recalling past fascination with orphan stories, mentioned that as readers they were safely ensconced in stable, often happy families. We were both wondering if today, when children move frequently and see at first-hand families broken apart by all kinds of disruption, fewer of them will be enthralled by the romantic and adventurous possibilities of children fending for themselves? I myself somehow feel that such stories may be less appealing because their basic situations seem less unlikely than they once did.
