The Jane Addams Children's Book Award Ceremony will be held Friday, October 21st, 2:30-4:30 at 777 United Nations Plaza (44th Street and 1st Avenue) in New York City. The next day is New York Public Library's wonderful Book Fest! (see Margaret Tice's post of August 31st). Why not make a children's book weekend of it and attend both? The Jane Addams ceremony is open to anyone interested in this award and who wants to meet the authors and illustrators who will be receiving them: Youme Landowne for Selavi: That's Life, A Haitian Story of Hope (Cinco Puntos Press); Ann Bausum for With Courage and Cloth: Winning the Fight for a Woman's Right to Vote (National Geographic); Javaka Steptoe, for the illustrations for Hot Day on Abbott Avenue (Clarion); William Low for the illustrations for Henry and the Kite Dragon (Philomel); James Rumford for Sequoyah: The Cherokee Man Who Gave His People Writing (Houghton Mifflin); and Deborah Ellis for The Heaven Shop (Fitzhenry & Whiteside). No reservations necessary, but y ou can check the website for more information (www.janeaddamspeace.org) or call the Jane Addams Peace Association office at 212-682-8830 or email at japa at igc.org.
And once again: The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards Committee is currently considering books published in 2005, in the United States. These awards, sponsored by the Jane Addams Peace Association, are given annually to books that most effectively promote the causes of peace, social justice, world community, and the equality of the sexes and all races, as well as meeting conventional standards of excellence. Awards are given in two categories: Books for Younger Children and Books for Older Children (ages 2-12). Please send, by December 31, 2005, two copies of any book that you believe meets these criteria to the JACBA committee chair: Donna Barkman, 1 Reservoir Road, Ossining NY 10562. For more information about the Jane Addams Peace Association, check the website: www.janeaddamspeace.org. Thank you for your interest! Donna
