[CCBC-Net] Missing parents

I asked my six-year-old, who is a fan of the Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket books, how she felt about the issue of missing parents or children on their own, and her perspective was, "...everyone thinks about their parents being dead or gone...and this is a safe way to think about it."

Interestingly, she's much more disturbed about the idea of divorce or separation than she is about death or dying. One she accepts as a natural part of the cycle of life, and the other she sees as a potential major life disruption.

Remembering my own fascination with Heidi and The Little Princess, I suppose part of the attraction of being an orphan is the chance to prove yourself and take care of yourself, something I never had the chance to do with those darned parents around....
