My conversations with kids about Book 6 have focused on exactly the point you make here, but I'm usually the one laying out this argument. Interestingly to me, the kids tend to accept Dumbledore's death and the point Rowling makes that Harry needs to go forth independently. That seems to resonate very soundly with them as opposed to my (adult?) ideal that it takes a village. However, kids have told me what while they think Harry can conquer Voldemort without Dumbledore, he will no doubt need some help from Ron, Hermione, and Ginny. Kid power!
