Announcement: Upcoming Changes on CCBC-Net

Later this month, we will be migrating to new software to manage the CCBC-Net listserv.
Early in 2005, our technical administrator, Chris Dowling, proposed looking some of the newer technology available. He has been doing research and trials, and in consultation with him we have decided to change to software that allows users -- all of you -- to manage their own CCBC-Net subscription information via a web interface.
This means it will be easier for people to subscribe, unsubscribe, change their subscription to DIGEST, etc.
On a day-to?y basis, you probably will not notice any difference. You will continue to post and receive CCBC-Net messages via your e-mail as you always have. Messages will continue to have "CCBC-Net" automatically appearing as part of the subject line. However, there are several changes we want to make sure you are aware of and understand.
  SUBSCRIPTION MANAGEMENT
As mentioned above, the day-to?y aspects of CCBC-Net will not change: you will continue to send and receive messages via e-mail. But the new software will enable CCBC-Net subscribers to have their own subscription management page. This is a simple web interface that lets you quickly and easily manage how you want to receive your messages (such as changing your subscription to DIGEST form), or to UNSUBSCRIBE.
As part of this new system:
  1) Everyone currently on CCBC-Net will be automatically assigned a password. The password is for access to your subscription management page. When we make the change later this month, you will receive an e-mail message that contains your password, along with a link to the subscription management page. Once you have the assigned password, we recommend that you log in and change your password to something you will easily remember. You may also want to bookmark the subscription management login page in your web browser. (You will be able to submit a request for your password via the subscription management page if you forget it.)
The HELP message sent at the start of each month will also contain your password, along with a link to the subscription management page.
  2) When you use the subscription management page, you will need to be certain of the e-mail address you use to subscribe. In order to manage your subscription, you need to identify yourself to the administrative software, and it recognizes subscribers by their subscriber e-mail address. (If, for example, you need a password reminder, you will need to identify yourself by your subscriber e-mail in order to make the request via the subscription management page.)
If you are subscribed under two or more e-mail address (perhaps receiving messages both at home and at work) you will receive a separate password for each one and you will need to manage each subscription separately (e.g., log in under each e-mail and password).
  3) If you decide to UNSUBSCRIBE from CCBC-Net, you will be asked to reply to a confirmation message. The same is true of all who SUBSCRIBE. This protects individuals from being subscribed or unsubscribed by someone else.

  ARCHIVES
  1) The archives will available to CCBC-Net subscribers only. You will need your password to access the archives.
  2) The _at_ sign will be removed from e-mail addresses in the archives and replaced with the word "at." This helps protect privacy by making addresses unrecognizable to programs that search the web for e-mail addresses, a method used by many who distribute junk e-mails.
  3) The archives will have more agile sorting features. They will still be organized by month, but will be viewable within each month by author (poster), date, subject, and topic thread.
  4) The archives for a current discussion will be accessible immediately (rather than after the month has ended). This will be especially helpful to someone who joins in the middle of a discussion and wants to read the messages already posted.
During this transition time, it will take awhile to get all of the past archives integrated with the new software. We will work backwards chronologically so that the most recent discussions will be available first.
We hope that these changes make CCBC-Net easier to manage and more user-friendly for us all.
If you have any questions or concerns about any of these changes, please contact CCBC Director Kathleen T. Horning (horning at education.wisc.edu), CCBC librarian Megan Schliesman (schliesman at education.wisc.edu), or, for technical questions, CCBC-Net technical administrator Chris Dowling (cdowling at ccbc.education.wisc.edu).
