I was in San Jose, Costa Rica on July 15 where I attended a midnight Harry Potter party at the Libreria Internacional conveniently located across the street from the Marriott Courtyard where I was staying. As a Harry Potter fan, didn't I get lucky?
I arrived at the bookstore at 10:30 and was greeted by a witch serving purple punch which I unwittingly drank, but suffered no ill effects. I was given the
#49 to receive my book. This number was laminated, hole-punched with a rubber band through the hole so that I could put it around my wrist. Using this very effficient system, I had Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in my hands by 12:15.
The children's literature area of the store was highly decorated. A magician and storyteller entertained the children in Spanish. What impressed me most was that in this country where Spanish is the primary language, this large bookstore was packed with people waiting to buy the British edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, at a cost of 12,800 colones or about $27!
I'd say that Harry Potter is alive and well in Costa Rica.
