I think that part of the allure of Harry Potter is the mass following - what fun for kids to get dressed up like their favorite characters and wait with millions of others worldwide in anticipation for the next book!
Because there is such a wide-span of ages that are fans, this also makes it a bridge between generations.
What I like about them is that Harry Potter got kids reading and talking about what they were reading.
