Harry Potter Library Events

One of our local libraries had a celebration, but it was on the following Tuesday, and not at midnight:

And on Tuesday, the Fort Braden Branch of the Leon County Public Library, 16327 Blountstown Highway, hosts a Harry Potter party from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Librarian Carolyn Klatt will oversee a game of Quidditch. Costumes are encouraged.

For her part, Megan is probably more excited about Tuesday's Harry Potter celebration at the Fort Braden Branch Library hosted by librarian Carolyn Klatt (Miss Carol, to Megan and many others). Participants are encouraged to wear costumes, create a wand and even engage in a lively game of Quidditch.

"That's really going to be something," Megan's mom, Daria Bass, said of the proposed Quidditch match.

In the books, Quidditch is a game played on flying brooms involving three balls, and Harry is an excellent player. Miss Carol said her version of the game will involve broomsticks, a specially modified carpet and balls that are actually baggies filled with rice.

"That way," she explained, "if there's an unfortunate incident, we can sweep it right up."

I didn't hear if it was well attended or not, however.

I do know that my branch manager at my previous location was not in favor of Harry Potter events, fearing it would upset the large population of homeschoolers we had as patrons. (I don't think they would mind, just not come.)

There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration.
