Chicago Blues (HarperCollins) by Julie Reece Deaver is a favorite of my sixth & seventh graders. It's about a seventeen-year-old art student whose little sister is suddenly left in her charge by their alcoholic mother. The thing that sets this book apart, I believe, is the humor in it, especially evident in the portrayal of Marnie, who is an eleven-year-old firecracker of a character. I think the two sisters on their own appeals to kids because they wonder about the particulars: how would a teen on her own pay for groceries, make the rent, and have any sort of meaningful life? Even as an adult, I find stories like these very appealing!
