Following on the heels of Norma Jean's posting, a title that has remained vivid in my mind for years and depicts one kind of abandonment for children being left on their own, and it's THE BEAR'S HOUSE by Marilyn Sachs. Nine-year-old Fran Ellen is left to cope by herself and with her four siblings because their mother has retreated into apathy and withdrawn from everyday life. Fran Ellen's coping mechanism is her classroom doll house where she creates a world with the toy bears that live there.

Short in length and huge in emotional impact, one that, unfortunately, still holds true today in situations that still exist.
