I'm a nonfiction writer as well and I think that Lisa was right on target saying that conveying wonder is part of the job. In fact, when I get stuck or think that my explanation of something is flat, I sometimes ask myself, "What is cool or amazing about this material? What evokes MY sense of wonder?" And the answer often gets me back on track.
A few years ago, it struck me that there is a good chance that a writer of nonfiction kids books just might be the first person to introduct a fact or, more importantly, an idea to a reader. An wonderful opportunity--and, an awesome responsibility.
