Norma Jean's astute comments about women editors made me wonder if the same is true for higher ed teachers of children's literature. About eight years ago, a professor of children's literature admitted during a similar discussion on child_lit that she ne ver got around to teaching nonfiction books, because she didn't care for it herself.
That's only one person, and a long time ago, but if it's true for the majority now, then it might account for the somewhat rare awards in the genre.
