I loved what Norma Jean said about CHOICE. There is pressure to conform and it is a relief to read stories where characters survive and/or thrive despite their noncomformity.

Books coming to mind: Stitches by Glen Huser; Billy Elliot (Novelization! by Melvin Burgess); The Serpent Slayer by Katrin Tchana; Sense Pass King by Katrin Tchana. And let's not forget William's Doll. And Dorothy Gale, in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
