Dotti...The fact that this book is written by a man (but isn't it under a female author's name?) is truly peculiar and somehow a bit misleading to readers...why? Can't put that into words exactly, except to say that my female/maternal radar kicks in here...it's kind of like going to a junior-high girl's flick, such as the Princess Diaries, and noticing a middle-aged man (with NO children in tow) sitting alone in the theater as the lights go up...my maternal instinct questions why he is there...could be a simple explanation but then again, in our perilous times, I sense the possibility of danger...Could also be because I am the mother of a middle school daughter too and this threat is very real for me.
Our large county library doesn't own The Rainbow Party--at least, not yet. I don't have jurisdiction over teen materials but I probably wouldn't purchase this title unless I had a patron request and even then, I'm suspicious. I truly believe that the rainbow party concept is a manufactured one, thought up by fearful adults or those who would use the teen world as a vehicle to stir up trouble for its own sake...
Reminds me of the movie Thirteen about a nice, sensible teen descends into sexual depravity and drug abuse and lives in a home where mom is quite oblivious...I know this can happen but at the moment, I prefer not to view or read materials that employ this type of scare tactic, which I don't think is too strong a phrase here.

But the concept was his female editor's. She asked him to write it.
