The Oklahoma scenario is extremely disturbing. IF you go to the NCAC's website Action Alert page at this URL -- http://www.ncac.org/action/alerts.html#OKLAHOMA --
you'll see where to write to protest this bigoted stance. The censors win because we stay silent. It's time to be heard.
I didn't finish reading my copy of the newletter, so I hadn't heard about the Iranian scientists. But I'm not surprised the NCAC is on the case. They are doing so much to try and battle this kind of assault on free speech. I'd strongly encourage people to look into membership to help support their efforts, along with letting their own voices ring clear.

In the Summer 2005 issue of the newsletter published by The National Coalition Against Censorship which I received today, the state legislature in Oklahoma has passed a resolution advising public libraries to remove all
"gay-themed books, including picture books, to the adult section." The resolution is non-binding but the sponsoring legislator has threatened to withhold funding from non-complying libraries. "Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and some in Congress have joined the bandwagon, with similar legislation in the works."

In Pasadena, Texas a parent's complaint about Judy Blume's Forever resulted in the book's removal from all school libraries in the district. In northern California, a 6th grader was charged with sexual harassment (!!!) for bringing her copy of Forever to school to lend to a friend. The matter was dropped when The National Coalition Against Censorship intervened.

On a different subject, The American Society for Aerospace Science will not allow Iranians and citizens of other "embargoed nations" to publish papers or attend future conferences under their auspices despite the lifting of such bans by the Treasury Department's Offices of Foreign Assets Control. The Institute claims it is banning such exchanges for security reasons; Iranian scientists have strongly protested. Norma Jean
