I echo Megan's feelings, particularly as an adult looking at childhood and children. It is important for us to make available messages and models that don't fit into stereotypes--whether children gravitate toward them or not. If they are made conscious and public, then eventually they will be more main stream. I think we've seen that with a lot of subjects.
On another note, a friend of mine is writing a book on girl stereotypes and one thing she has noticed is the preponderance of YA books that portray working mother's in a unflattering light. I thought I would just throw that out there and see if anyone else has noticed this.
