My favorite science book for young children is one I have used when Pre-K and K are studying animal migration. When a tiny, creepy crawly awakes one morning and says,
"I don't know much, but I know what I know" kids immediately get the concept of internal motivation... in this case, " I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go to Mexico." Despite all odds this little creature makes it to Mexico where he can join in the miraculous celebration of the Monarch Butterfly dance.
Sam Swope, with the help of a marvelous illustrator, keeps each page simple with lots of white space, but even my Kindy children can explain this concept after reading this marvelous explanation.
