Hi!
What a difficult question. Part of the answer, I suspect, is that we can't predict what the children will understand in the books they read. Two children can read the same book, and have two compeletely different experiences. For one child it was too much, and for the other it was not. So we adults can understand the reeasons why subjects might be "too far," but I don't think we can predict what will be too far for every child every time.
