This thread has been energizing to me. I am in the "buckle" of the Bible Belt - Columbia, South Carolina, and my principal is the spouse of a well-known Southern Baptist preacher. One afternoon after school she called me into her office and inquired whether or not our collection contained books "which portrayed children living in homes with same-gender parents." Instantly I went on the defensive, rattling off about intellectual freedom, the right to read, and whatever else they taught me in library school. She calmly replied that she just wanted to be sure that "all children could find themselves and their situation in at least some of our books." How I misjudged her. Those are truly the words we need to remember during this discussion - being sure children can find themselves on our shelves.
