I'm wondering if all this doesn't have something to do with the age and
experience of today's acquiring editors. When I attend conferences I'm
always amazed at how young the editors are...most in their late twenties >>
Hey, I'm in my late twenties! I don't think being young is always a handicap
(I'm not saying that that's what you were implying, Dotti... but I have gotten strange reactions from people because of my age, in the past--especially when I was first published). There are times when I've read a YA novel and thought that the author was really out of touch with today's teens. Perhaps it is sometimes *good* to be closer to the audience that you're writing/editing for.
I've met/worked with young editors and older editors. Age doesn't always reflect outlook or attitude.
My 2 cents.
