Maia, Steven and others:

There are actually quite a few books that speak to teens and activism.

Beyond Tashjian's books try:

nonfiction: "It's Our World Too! Young People Who Are Making a Difference"
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Volunteering For Teens"
"Teen Rights: A Legal Guide .."
                    "Peace"
                    "Free Your Mind" (GLBT)
"The Legacy of Luna" (environmental activism)
"Zoya's Story" (teenage activist against the Taliban)
"In My Hands" (teen rescuer during WWII)
"Sky" - Ippswich (teen member of the Dutch Underground WWII)
                    "Warriors Don't Cry" (integration)

fiction: "Going, Going" Nye
             "Whale Talk" Crutcher
"The Adventures of the Blue Avenger" Howe
"Doing Time: Notes From the Undergrad" Thomas
"The Year They Burned the Books" Garden
             "I am the Messenger" Zusak

And it's important to remember that much utopia/dystopia science fiction addresses real world problems.
