Reluctant readers (was: How far is too far?)

James...the Lemony Snicket books appear to be extremely popular among middle school boys. For some reason, they love all that dry humor and gothic overtones, exactly the stuff moms fear, LOL. I actually think that the kids who read and appreciate these books have quite a well?veloped sense of humor. When you think about, the humor in these books is fairly high-brow for the average kid.

Recently, I watched the film "Are We There Yet?" with my 9 and 11-year old...I thought it was trash, some swearing and lots of sexual innuendo...but, they loved it! The two kids in that movie made Junie B. Jones look like a saint...we talked about that aspect of the movie for a bit later and that helps (me) a lot. I find one of the most difficult challenges of parenting is allowing my children to develop their own likes and dislikes, sigh.

I suppose this is why I completely understand the well-meaning folks who come to the library seeking "quality" literature for their kids...now, I steer them towards that Dav Pilkey/Daniel Pinkwater shelf instead of Heidi or Treasure Island...and I imagine a very grateful child at home, LOL.

For my son, it was "Series of Unfortunate Events", which my wife was reluctant for him to start, because of the 'depressing tone' "Snickett" gives to the intro. However, once I started reading sections of them aloud to the family, she gave in and he's tearing through them! A year ago, we couldn't get him to pick up a book on his own without a struggle.
