I hope -- and believe -- that most CCBC folks, unlike wfkig, realize that, although there is as yet no scientific proof, it is very unlikely that homosexuality is a choice, just as hetereosexuality is not a choice. I did not choose to be gay, nor has any GLBT person I know or have met. Indeed, who would choose to be something that is subject to prejudice, second-class citizenship, gross misunderstanding, and verbal and physical violence? Books that are about GLBT people anbd issues are not offering straight kids a choice, nor are books about straight kids offering GLBT kids a choice (indeed GLBT kids read straight books all the time and don't "become" straight). Books about GLBT kids can, however, help straight kids understand their GLBT peers, and can encourage a lessening of prejudice and homophobia -- besides being good literature and good stories.
