FLB and style

Maia - I agree with you that FLB's style, at least in the Weetzie Bat books, might be described as
'lipglossy.' I also agree that her books address some very difficult issues: you've mentioned AIDS, drug addiction, and sexual abuse among others. But here's my question: am I right in thinking, from reading your posts, that you find this choice of style inappropriate for these choices of topics? And if so, why is that? Is it possible that this style may appeal to certain young readers and get them thinking about these issues, where a more direct approach might strike them as just another grownup sermon?
