As an author, I have to agree with Norma Jean. My first novel deals with religion, but more specifically, it deals with one girl's relationship with God. It asks a question that I grappled with in my own life and that I had a deep desire to explore: If you thank God for all the good things that come your way, does that mean you should blame him for all the bad stuff? Is God out there making things happen, or is he more of a spectator -- cheering for you, crying for you, hoping for your happiness?
In a time when many publishers are saying they don't want manuscripts with elements of religion or God, I feel lucky to have found an editor at FSG who wasn't afraid of tackling these important and very real issues. Hopefully, some of you will read my book when it comes out next spring!
