Reluctant readers (was: How far is too far?)

For my son, it was "Series of Unfortunate Events", which my wife was reluctant for him to start, because of the 'depressing tone' "Snickett" gives to the intro. However, once I started reading sections of them aloud to the family, she gave in and he's tearing through them! A year ago, we couldn't get him to pick up a book on his own without a struggle.
