how far is too far...

BlankSo many people who "should" be taking responsibility -- authors, editors, school libraries, teachers, parents... Mind boggling. Yes, the content and context of the literature for youth is surely changing ... and for this I am undeniably glad.

But as I've been reading these posts, I've been wondering where the responsibility comes to educate young readers on what it is that contributes to a book being considered of "literary quality." Standardized tests have driven many teachers (and I'm the last one to say all...) to get through the literature and the writing to attend to what is on the test -- with jobs and money on the line for higher scores.

Who will help our young people read books with a different level of intensity and analysis? Now of course, I'm not saying that all reading needs to be in this vein... But if we are going to be involved in developing this "nation of readers," I feel we also need to share our knowledge as literature folks to assist blooming readers.
