In my first years of teaching high school English, one of the phonecalls in to complain about a book was about two high school young women who turned down a ride home and then walked--had to be lesbians, said the caller. Get that book out of the room library!
I loved it when Ray Bradbury said ideas "vaccinated" us against the evil itself--so that when words that are "charged" come up, we don't confuse them with the actions and can talk about situations without having to hide the words.
Congratulations to librarians and teachers who can put out lots of ideas, lifestyles, and words -- too many self?nsor and keep anything which might be controversial out of the classrooms.
B. J. Ihlenfeldt, former De Forest HS English Department instructor who loved the discussions some of which continued for years after the students graduated
