I am one who used as a text when I was teaching university courses about children's books, "Only Connect" as the only essential background reading. Reading books for children and discussing them were the other demands.
For a strong bibliography about Canadian children's books, see: Baker & Setterington's "A Guide to Canadian Children's Books," (McClelland & Stewart, Ltd.,Toronto, 2003) It will be worth your time and perhaps expand our somewhat provincial attitudes.
