I just finished reading Daniella Carmi's Samir and Yonatan, which won publisher Arthur A. Levine/Scholastic the 2001 Batchelder Award. A very nuanced look at "the other", from the point of view of Samir, a Palestinian boy in a Jewish hospital ward who becomes friends with Yonatan, the scientifically-minded Jewish boy in the next bed. If anything, it's more timely now than when it was first published. (The original Hebrew text appeared in 1994, and the English translation in 2000.) Deeply memorable characters, plus a magical software-assisted trip to Mars. Incidentally, this book is also beautifully designed. A wonderful read!
