Great suggestion, Jim, and a good way to remind students that song lyrics are poetry too, as someone mentioned earlier.

I have been listening to the music of Canadian artist Loreena McKennitt for several years now. On her list, there are several English teachers who use her music for their poetry classes.

Two of her versions of well known poems in particular get heavy mention:

Tennyson's "Lady of Shallott" (album: "The Visit") and Noyes' "the Highwayman"(album: "The Book of Secrets")

they are 'slightly' abridged, but still come in at over 10 minutes each! If you haven't heard them, she really (IMO) captures the essence of the poems. The teachers say that they teach the poems, and then after assigning whatever assignments go along with them, they play the song versions and see how the students react and if they find any additional meanings in them.
