Poetry out loud

I still remember encountering Dr. Seuss at the age of 9 or 10 and disliking the books. Now I can enjoy them to read out loud. However, 40+ years later, I find I still do not care to read poetry. I reflected on the comments about poetry needing to be read out loud, but realized that while I enjoy hearing Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac, what intrigues me are the snippets of biographical information, the human interest aspect but not the poetry. As I read others rave about various poets, I keep wondering why I can't get excited about the same ones. Did I not have enough exposure to poetry at a young age? Is it because I'm very much a visual learner, very much not an aural learner?

Whatever the reasons, I will continue to purchase poetry for the libraries, but rely solely on reviews for selection of it. I'll share some poetry during library time, but it will not be on a weekly basis. And I will be that much more aware that we all have different preferences for the materials we find speak to us as individuals.
