I really like
"can he catch up with his soul"
And I like the ordinariness of the situation. Poetry is all over the place.
What age children is the critic thinking of? If you're talking about urban ones, 11 and up, this, with its natural language, might reach them. And it does reach me.
I would not use it with the preschool, or early elementary, but there are other sites for them, and I'd be happy to hear more about those.
