Last year Rebecca Kai Dotlich published OVER IN THE PINK HOUSE: NEW JUMP ROPE RHYMES, an infections collection of sparkling whimsy and effervescent charm, tied together with a gossamer thread.
While its description, a series of 2nd person poems written to her cat, suggests something cloying and cute, Cynthia Rylant's new volume BORIS is, in fact, deep and warm and crooked and really quite moving.
And it is worth mentioning that Simon James' DAYS LIKE THIS: A COLLECTION OF SMALL POEMS is newly issued in paperback. Here is a perfect consistency of image and verse. James achieves a remarkably easy intimacy, applying his open, sunny style to a collection of gems, with painted and written line perfectly measured for young eyes and ears. This is a man who knows his audience.
