Announcement: 2005 Charlotte Zolotow Award

Kevin Henkes, author of "Kitten's First Full Moon," published by Greenwillow / HarperCollins, and edited by Virginia Duncan, is the eighth annual winner of the Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding writing in a picture book, given by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, a library of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin Madison. An award presentation, hosted by the Friends of the CCBC, Inc., will be held in Madison on April 25.

The award committee named three Honor Books: "Coming On Home Soon" written by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by E. B. Lewis, edited by Nancy Paulsen and published by Putnam; "Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale" written and illustrated by Mo Willems, edited by Alessandra Balzer
 and published by Hyperion; and "Polar Bear Night" written by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by Stephen Savage, edited by David Saylor and published by Scholastic Press.

Established in 1998, the award honors the work of Charlotte Zolotow, a distinguished children's book editor for 38 years with Harper Junior Books, and author of more than 70 picture books, including such classic works as "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" (Harper, 1962) and
"William's Doll" (Harper, 1972). Ms. Zolotow attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison on a writing scholarship from 1933 to 1936 where she studied with Professor Helen C. White. The award is given for outstanding writing in a picture book for children in the birth through seven age range.

The award committee also cited nine titles as Highly Commended:

(Melanie Kroupa / Farrar, Straus and Giroux), "Bittle" by Patricia MacLachlan and Emily MacLachlan (Joanna Cotler Books / Harper Collins),
"Boo Boo" by Olivier Dunrea (Houghton Mifflin), "Hot Day on Abbott Avenue" by Karen English (Clarion), "A Monkey Among Us" by Dave Horowitz (HarperFestival / HarperCollins), "Superdog: The Heart of a Hero" by Caralyn Buehner (HarperCollins, 2004), and "Whose Garden Is It?" by Mary Ann Hoberman.
