When I took time to think about the large black period in the book, I thought of it as a "period" in both its common dictionary usages:
* an interval or unit of time (i.e. "the post war period")
* a punctuation mark indicating a full stop It made sense to me as well as being so large as to be graphically arresting. My young readers all seem to know exactly what it signifies.

The question of male audience is an intriguing one which you challenge me to investigate further. Kate McClelland
