I appreciate what Steven Engelfried said about Rumford's Sequoyah being deceptively simple. Like many of the best picture story books, the writing is simple and lyrical with every word serving a purpose. I also feel that the accuracy of the text is to be applauded since knowledge about Sequoyah is limited and, as Rumford notes, " the facts compete with the legends." Using language like "They tell us" and "They say" Rumford touches upon the salient events in Sequoyah's life, including his all important work of cultural conservation in the form of his brilliant Cherokee syllabary.
