I also felt a "folkloric" or fairy tale resonance as I read The_Crow_Girl. Sometimes, it also reminded me a bit of the way David Almond deals with universal themes.
I appreciated that (in contrast to lots of tales) this beautiful book included the idea that good vs. evil can be a bit simplistic-- that who and what is good for one person, place or time might be bad for another person, place or time and that one has the fortune of instinct (intuition) to help discern, among the possibilities, what is the right fit.
I also was impressed by the way the cast of characters showed different manifestations of grief-pain (madness, fear, melancholy, despair), yet found a satisfying place in a chosen family.
I think this would make a good read-aloud for a multi-generational group. Even when the plot action slows, the emotional "action" of the story was provoking in great ways.
