Fortune's Bones is one of the most moving children's books I've ever read. The image of Dinah dusting her husband's bones, and Nelson's eloquent accompanying poem will remain with me forever, I think, but the value of the book has to lie also in its meticulous tracing of the history of Fortune's bones. That revealing history says so much about the changes in our attitudes on the subject of race in the years since Fortune's death. And, as she did in Carver, Nelson has given me a thought to hold on to as I grow older, "I am not my body." Sally Derby
