During this time of global, national, and local conflict, you are invited to check out your school or public library for the article titled "Imagining Peace and Social Justice: The Jane Addams Children's Book Award," by Susan C. Griffith and Donna Barkman. It has just been published in the March 2005 issue of "Book Links"
(American Library Association: Vol. 14, No. 4 - pp. 59 - 63) You can also find the article online: www.ala.org/BookLInks; click on Current Issue. Featured are 31 widely varied books honored between 1998 and 2004 as Jane Addams Children's Book Award Winners & Honor Books. The annotated titles range from those particularly apt for the K-3 curriculum to books for young readers in grades 4-8. A brief feature about "The Breadwinner Trilogy" by Deborah Ellis brings these timely, memorable novels set in Afghanistan to attention. The heart of every issue of "Book Links" is always its several annotated bibliographies with strong curriculum interest. There are also citations to audio and web connections, along with a page combining brief background information about Jane Addams, the award, and how winners for the annual award are determined.
The 2005 Jane Addams Children's Book Award winners will be announced on April 28: http://www.janeaddamspeace.org/index.asp . April 28th is the annual anniversary of the founding of the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom by Jane Addams who later won the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize.
