Some NYC Children Respond to the Gates

Some of you may have heard about or seen Christo and Jeanne-Claude's art installation in Central Park which ended this past Sunday. I'm a long-time fan of the artists, a runner who knows (or thought she knew) the park from hours and hours of training and racing in it, and a teacher who always looks for serendipidous opportunities to extend my 4th graders' learning. This was a grand one since our school is a block away from the park. We had a wonderful time documenting this project, ending with a very special Gates Celebration last Friday which included cupcakes with pipe cleaner and tissue paper "gates'
(recyclable of course:), "Pin the Fabric on the Gate" and more.

I consider The Gates relevant to this list because it generated so much discussion everywhere about art, from adults and children alike
(and aren't we always tussling with this question here too --- what makes a book good art/literature?) . Certainly it provoked lively discussion on childlit and among my students. Seeing very few children's view points in the media I offer my website to those who are interested: http://intranet.dalton.org/ms/4th/Gates/index.htm.
